SAN FRANCISCO, November 27 (Xinhua) — A group of 23 former members of the Chinese national women's soccer team on Wednesday started a cultural exchange tour to the Bay Area, which will pass on to younger soccer players both soccer skills and the legacy of the team's glory during its golden times two decades ago.

The visiting delegation comprises three generations of the Chinese national women's soccer team players, who were hailed by Chinese fans as "Steel Roses" for their spirit of strong will, strength and endurance after the iconic 1999 World Cup final match, in which Chinese women players lost to the U.S. team 5-4 on a single penalty kick in the wake of a tense, scoreless draw.

Despite the loss, the Chinese women's team, who were extolled as national heroines, moved the Chinese people for their underlying determination and unyielding spirit to fight tooth and nail against their higher-ranked U.S. rivals in the game.

During a welcome event Tuesday night for the Chinese women players who arrived in San Francisco earlier in the day, Chinese Deputy Consul General in San Francisco Ren Faqiang said the Chinese women's soccer team, some of whom fought the famous China-U.S. game in the Rose Bowl Stadium in Los Angeles in 1999, created history more than two decades ago and remained heroines of the Chinese people.

"Their spirit has inspired many Chinese young people for decades and their current visit to the Bay Area will hopefully boost cultural exchanges between China and the United States," he said.

Former Union City Mayor Mark Green told Xinhua that he has been involved in athletics all his life since his childhood, and "soccer has always been something that's been important in my family for the last 25 years or so."

"It's great that the organization here is having the (Chinese) women's soccer team out of China and they come into the United States," he said.

"Soccer has been a growing sport nationwide and worldwide, and it's another sign of the growing connection between China and the United States, not just in business or just not in cultural activities, but also in athletic activities," Green added.

The Chinese women's team was invited here by Zhou Yang, founder and head coach of Asian-American Youth Soccer Academy, who retired from the Chinese women's soccer team in 1996 after she played the Women's World Cup in 1995.

"I've always cherished a dream of training more young soccer players and teach them the team spirit that encourages them to remain strong in face of setbacks or even failures," she said.

She added that her soccer school will focus on teaching more kids of Chinese American families to play the popular sports event and let them grow strong not only physically but also with a powerful will.

The visiting members will play several friendship games with local soccer fans in the next few days in the Bay Area, including a game with some veterans of former U.S. national women's soccer team in San Mateo, California, on Saturday.
